Abstract

Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the effects of back massage on pain and state anxiety in patients following post abdominal surgery.

Method: A onegroup pre and post-test design used to messure pain and state anxiety in patients following post abdominal surgery. 14 patient participated in the study. The instruments to measure the VAS (Visual analog Scale) for pain measurement and the spielberger selfevaluation questionnaire (STAI) 20 items developed by Kim& Shin (1978) for the status anxiety level. Data were analyzed with Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and Spearman correlation with using the SPSS WIN 14.0 program.

Result: 1. The intensity of pain has decreased significantly after back massage as compared to before back massage in post operation 1day(z=-2.41, p=.02) and 2day(z=-2.54, p=.01). 2. The level of anxiety has decreased significantly after back massage as compared to before back massage in post operation 1day(z=-3.15, p=.00) and 2day(z=-3.08, p=.00). 3. But there was no significant difference between before and after back massage in blood pressure and pulse rates.

Conclusion: Back massage was an effective nursing intervention for pain and anxiety level control in patients
following post abdominal surgery.
